While I grew up skating and still love it, SK8: The Infinity certainly likes to take some creative liberties with exactly what people can achieve while riding on a skateboard. That being said, I think this is a good thing it and does nothing to take away from the show; in fact I think it makes it fun!
No one is out here kamehameha-ing on a skateboard. Sk8: The Infinity is a currently airing anime for the Winter season that you can view on Funimation. The two main characters involved are Reki and Langa. Reki is a young boy from Okinawa who has been skating for the majority of his life; he very much feels like a representation of most of the audience who got into skating. While he may have been skating for a long time, he is by no means an absolute god of the sport. When learning a new trick, Reki takes numerous attempts, and only after failing repeatedly does he finally succeed.
Langa, meanwhile, is a the same age as Reki. However, he grew up in Canada with his mother and father, and after his father passed away, his mother decided to return to where she grew up — Okinawa. After Reki and Langa meet we learn that Langa grew up snowboarding and was, quite evidently, very good at it. After finding himself wrapped up in a Beef, Langa displays a rather surprising amount of talent for skating by applying everything he learned from snowboarding.
Legendary skater Adam, also known as The Matador of Love and the founder of The S, takes an interest in Langa and his unique way of skating. As I mentioned earlier, this series runs along similar lines to Kuroko No Basket in the way it exaggerates what is really possible when riding a skateboard. The anime seems to combine the numerous forms of skating such as street skating along with downhill longboard skating.
Is this exaggeration on reality an issue though? Absolutely not! Reki embodies the probably the most realistic depiction of a street skater, emphasised by his board, his style, the fact he learns at the local half-pipe, and even the process of repeated bailing to learn something new. Then you have a character like Adam who is completely over the top and absurd to the absolute maximum level. This man manages to turn on a dime during a downhill race and instantly begin to accelerate uphill — ridiculous, I know.

Studio Bones and director Hiroko Utsumi have done a great job at creating a fun, adventure-packed story in just 12 episodes. Sk8 the Infinity starts by introducing Reki, the eager protagonist who loves skateboarding more than anything. Later, we meet new student and ex-snowboarder Langa who learns how to skateboard from Reki and ends up being extremely talented. Throughout the season Reki and Langa share memorable moments with their skateboards and without. One of the most impressive parts of the season is the character dynamics. Fans fell in love with the dynamic between expressive Reki and quiet Langa. Reki learns just how much he loves skateboarding, and Langa learns that too, in addition to discovering how much he loves spending time with Reki. It all builds to the finale, where Langa goes against the wealthy and dramatic skating champion, Adam.

But many shows fall into a tired trope: having a protagonist who is really good at their respective sport from the very beginning.
Funimation's Sk8 The Infinity is a lot like other sports anime. A gaggle of main characters centered around skateboarding but rather than a sanctioned event, "S" is more of an underground event. Reki, the underdog protagonist, brings together the group of skaters that will take down Adam, the rich and eccentric co-founder of "S. There has to be a villain and Ainosuke, known in the "S" world as Adam, is arguably the worst character but the best villain. And fans get a glimpse of his potential redemption by the end of season 1.
