You probably have come across Welcome to the NHK at one point or another in its anime or, less likely, manga form but I doubt many are aware that the story originated from a light novel by the same name written by Tatsuhiko Takimoto. When I was little, my dream was to go to Tokyo University and become a great scholar. I wanted to invent something that would help all mankind. As the story starts, we find the protagonist Satou living alone in his apartment after quitting college, unable to overcome his depressing hikikomori lifestyle.

A common theme throughout the story deals with the hardships of life and how people must deal with them in their own way. The manga's forty chapters have been collected into eight bound volumes released in Japan and overseas. The English edition of the manga is published by Tokyopop, and the first volume was released in October The novel was also adapted into a episode anime television series by Gonzo which aired in Japan between July and December on Chiba TV.
In , the anime became one of over 30 ADV titles acquired by Funimation. While it mainly deals with the phenomenon of hikikomori, the plot also explores many other Japanese subcultures—for example: otaku, lolicon, and Internet suicide pacts. I just finished reading Welcome to the NHK. It is not a pleasant book. Why not? Even if author Takimoto Tatsuhiko is not the lead character Satou Tatsuhiro, the authorial voice in the novel makes them indistinguishable. In the first afterword he says how difficult it is for him to read his own work.

The household appliances in their chorus, revealed to Sato that he was a victim of NHK. Upon epiphany, Sato declared war on NHK and took it upon himself to defeat the evil organisation. Cherry trees blossomed. But Sato had done nothing about his intent to bring down NHK. He realised that time is running out because his parents are about to stop providing for his living expenses.
