Early betty boop

Created by cartoon animator Max Fleischer, Betty Boop became a cultural icon in the s. A symbol of the bygone roaring twenties and all of its wonderful debauchery, the cartoon was a hit with adults and later with children, when she became more toned down. More than the caricature of a flapper, Betty Boop represented a fully realized woman. Other female cartoons of the era like Minnie Mouse were almost replicas of their male counterparts with only a few details changed; the animations did not take on the human female form and were portrayed as childish. Betty on the other hand was sexually autonomous and outspoken against the old values asserted by her parents and the previous generations. Nevertheless, after the infamous Hays Code forced morality restrictions on film, the sexual and psychological undertones of Miss Boop were almost entirely eliminated.

Betty Boop’s a Red Hot Mama (1934)

In the s, a major entertainment studio brought a German fairy tale about a beautiful princess, an evil queen, a magic mirror and seven dwarfs to the animated screen for the first time. And Betty Boop , a charming, baby-faced flapper, was its star. Created by brothers Max and Dave Fleischer in , Betty —envisioned not as a cartoon version of any single performer , but rather as an archetype of Jazz Age culture —appeared in animated shorts throughout the Great Depression.

She was an instant success. The enduring image of Betty is a flapper in a strapless minidress, with a garter peeking out above her knee and large hoop earrings in her ears. Initially, Betty was depicted as a dog with a button nose and floppy ears.

After a makeover, Betty became the first fully human, fully female animated character. At its height in the s, Fleischer Studios was a giant in animation, rivaled only by Disney. From its home in California, Disney was laying the groundwork for the idyllic, fantastical fairy tales that would soon dominate its oeuvre. In New York, meanwhile, Fleischer created a grungy, often dangerous urban world for its characters to navigate. In the Fleischer landscape, anything was possible, and seemingly nothing was off limits.

Halfway through the film, jazz legend Cab Calloway a regular guest in Betty Boop cartoons performs a spooky musical number, embodied first by Koko and then by a ghost.

But Betty Boop takes it for granted that Bimbo and Koko will form a background for her talents in each production. As the star, Betty played a range of roles. She was a circus performer , a racecar driver and a presidential candidate. But she was first and foremost a sex symbol. She is the only film star who wears fewer clothes than Jean Harlow. Though Betty was aware of her sex appeal and often used it to her advantage, her sexuality also proved to be a liability.

Men were constantly chasing her down and forcing her into unwanted sexual interactions. Though Betty was usually able to escape, these kinds of storylines depended on the entertainment derived from the chase. When she rejects his advances, Mickey speeds the plane up, sending Minnie rocketing toward the sky and placing him in the ideal position to catch her. When Minnie still refuses, Mickey forces himself on her. Headline-making scandals in s Hollywood had led to intense public scrutiny of the industry, with a slew of states enacting film censorship laws.

Hays , which outlined how to approach subjects like sex, dancing, drugs, vulgarity and crime. The Hays Code came into full effect for live action films in and animation around For Betty , that meant changes to her look, personality and plotlines. She became taller and older, and her dresses started stretching past her knee to hide her trademark garter.

She dresses more modestly—censors, you know. As the Great Depression continued, men concerned about women supposedly stealing their jobs began directing their hostility toward working women. Koko the Clown was replaced by eccentric inventor Grampy , and Bimbo was swapped out for Pudgy , a cuddly pet puppy. In , the Fleischers retired the Betty Boop cartoons. Soon after, the studio—acquired by Paramount and rebranded —shut down production.

Betty lay dormant until , when Paramount sold most of its pres shorts to a television syndicator. In the decades that followed, Betty was visible mainly through merchandise and some scattershot cameos.

Black History Month: Esther Jones, The Original Betty Boop

Philippe Moins takes a look at one of the oldest and most respected animation schools in continental European. One of her early films, Accordion Joe , seems to have been inadvertently left out, while Republic did not have the rights to Popeye the Sailor , an official Boop film in which she only appears briefly, and to four other late films which are mostly lost: Pudgy and the Lost Kitten , Buzzy Boop which does exist in some poor 16mm prints , Buzzy Boop at the Concert and Honest Love and True. Buzzy is Betty's year-old niece. Also, the films are arranged thematically, rather than chronologically, which is somewhat offputting, given the lack of proper liner notes. Despite its flaws, the collection is an invaluable resource for both animation buffs and historians, as it provides the first large scale collection of films from the Fleischer Studios available in video; however, it is a shame that it was not issued in laserdisc format which seems to have been the original intent and that it lacks any program notes worthy of the name. Thus, the only listing of the films is on the box for each tape and there is no information on release dates.
