For thousands of years, the Spring Festival has been a time to appreciate a bumper harvest, to pray for a good year ahead, to worship gods and ancestors and to renew family ties. It is traditional to set off fireworks, hang red lanterns, put up New Year couplets, attend live performances, and give and receive "red envelopes." The festival is also a time to showcase the rich heritage of different cultures. According to the Chinese lunar calendar, this year is the Year of the Tiger, one of the 12 zodiac animals. Many tiger subspecies are endangered and in urgent need of protection, but the tiger has long been called "the king of the forest." It has a vivid image in literature, paintings, handicrafts and other artistic mediums in different civilizations. People, especially the ancient Chinese, have drawn inspiration from this powerful animal in nature. World Insight presents a special program looking at the ways the tiger has impacted our culture.
